Sample questions
Question 1
A power steering pump whines, and the fluid in the reservoir looks foamy. What should be checked first?
- Fluid level and suction side leaks
- Pump relief valve setting
- Steering gear worm bearing preload
- Tie rod end condition
Show the answer
A. Fluid level and suction side leaks. Foam means air is getting into the fluid. Check the level, then look for an air leak on the low pressure side between reservoir and pump. Replacing the pump without finding the air leak will not cure it.
Question 2
What is the safety concern when replacing a strut on a coil spring?
- Keeping the shock fluid warm during the removal of the strut
- Bleeding the strut through its top nut before it comes out
- Keeping the sway bar link connected during the removal
- Keeping the spring compressed with the proper tool
Show the answer
D. Keeping the spring compressed with the proper tool. A compressed spring stores a lot of energy. Use the correct compressor, and check that it is holding before loosening the strut's top nut.
Question 3
Which is the usual order for adjusting alignment?
- Rear toe, front toe, then camber and caster
- Front camber, toe, then rear, then caster
- Rear angles, then front caster, camber and toe
- Front toe, camber, caster, then rear
Show the answer
C. Rear angles, then front caster, camber and toe. Toe comes last, because caster and camber changes move it. The rear goes first, because it sets the thrust line that the front is aligned to.
